The Taranaki region derives its name, climate and much of its character from the dormant volcano Mount Taranaki (Mount Egmont). It is approximately seventy thousand years old and it's last eruption was two centuries ago.
With no near influences plants and insects have evolved unique to the region. Threaded with farms and towns Taranaki is the most densely settled rural region in New Zealand.
Onshore and offshore reservoirs of natural gas have been located and tapped. Modest but significant oil wells operate using oil rigs. Taranaki has been transformed by New Zealand’s energy needs in to a region of prosperity. |
